FOR FRIDAY     TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING:  Isaiah 51:1-8

“Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug.  Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, but I blessed him and made him many.” (Isaiah 51:1b-2; The New Revised Standard Version)

Isaiah 51.1The words of promise found in the Bible often sound like wishful thinking, pious optimism, a futile blowing in the wind.  So Isaiah tries to convince us of his message of hope by encouraging us to look back to our origins – remember who you are and the promises that God has given before.  Remind yourself of the stories of those who went before you, who though they suffered in the past, found fulfillment in God.

We look to the past to find hope for the future.  We are not the first to endure difficult times.  God’s salvation has come before and will come again to us, even this day.

PRAYER:  Thank you, God, for the cloud of witnesses who surround me.  Help me to remember their steadfast witness so that I may trust in your saving grace today.  Amen
