FOR TUESDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Hebrews 6:13-20
“We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It’s an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God.” (Hebrews 6:18b-19; The Message)
“Do you want to use a lifeline?” That was the question posed to stumped contestants on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” Sometimes their “lifeline” came through for them – many times the contestant was still left on their own. The writer of Hebrews speaks about a spiritual lifeline to God whose promise is unbreakable. This lifeline is no other than Jesus who will never let us down.
After watching a life-saving drill in the treacherous waters near Boston, Massachusetts, Rev. Edwin Ufford was inspired to return home and write his beloved him with this refrain: “Throw out the lifeline! Throw out the lifeline! Someone is drifting away.” The lifeline we have to offer others today is the promised hope of Jesus. Let’s hold on with both hands to this hope and never let go.
PRAYER: Hope of all the Ages, I put my trust in you and I thank you for holding on to me even when my grip begins to be lost. Amen.
