FOR THURSDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 34
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise will always be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1; Common English Bible)
Note that the psalmist did not say he would be happy at all times – thinking that everything would always go to suit him. He simply proclaims that in every situation he encounters, good or bad, he will seek to find some way to bless the Lord. Peterson offers us this translation: “I bless God every chance I get; my lungs expand with his praise” (The Message).
The reason behind the psalmist words of blessing is not because he figures he will always feel great about what happens to him. Instead, this decision to offer praise and thanksgiving in all things arises from his trust and belief that God is working through all things to bring forth good. Therefore, he is determined to always be thankful.
When the stresses of life begin to press in around you, remember to stop where you are, look up, and take a deep breath, filling your lungs with the Spirit of life, so that you might even then remember the goodness of God.
PRAYER: Spirit of the Living God, remind me to pause and remember to find Your goodness and love in every moment of my life this day. Amen.
