FOR FRIDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 9:9-13
But when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard it, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do.” (Matthew 9:11-12; Common English Bible)
When questioned about the people with whom he was eating and fellowshiping, Jesus reminds the Pharisees that it is as natural for him to gravitate toward the sinners and those who are broken as it is for a doctor to hang around sick people. The physician needs the sick to fulfill his or her call as the sick need the doctor to find hope and healing.
Our first step to spiritual wholeness is to realize our need. In the spirit of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, we all must first admit that we are powerless over the sin that so easily besets us. Only then do we open ourselves to the help of the Healer.
Prayer: Caring and Compassionate God, I come to You for the healing I need this day to be wholly and fully Yours. Amen.
