FOR MONDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Mark 1:14-15
“Now is the time! Here comes God’s kingdom! Change your hearts and lives, and trust this good news!” (Mark 1:15; Common English Bible)
Every time we pray as our Lord taught us to pray we say to our Heavenly Father, “Thy kingdom, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” I confess, most of my life, the image I had in my mind when I said this was of the sorry shape this world is in and I was hoping that God would somehow in a miraculous way finally straighten everything out.
John Wesley’s teaching of the kingdom of God has shifted the focus of my prayer through the years. Wesley understood the kingdom of God as a condition of the soul, a matter of the heart. The marks of this kingdom is seen when one has Spirit-inspired joy, holiness, and peace in one’s life so that one’s witness can bring the Good News to others in the world.
I’m reminded of my favorite hymn the children of my home church used to sing at the end of every Christmas program which offered this prayer: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me”.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, may your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven and let it begin with me in my heart. Change me in whatever way is needed that I may be a witness of your love. Amen.
