FOR WEDNESDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 9:18-25
While Jesus was speaking to them, a ruler came and knelt in front of him, saying, “My daughter has just died. But come and place your hand on her, and she’ll live.”(Matthew 9:18; Common English Bible)
William Barclay makes an interesting notation that this ruler came to Jesus with “a very inadequate motive”. He didn’t come to Jesus “as a result of an outflow of the love of his heart; he came to Jesus because he had tried everything and everyone else, and because there was nowhere else to go” (The Daily Study Bible Series, page 341). Nevertheless, the man did come to Jesus and there he found hope and new life.
Whatever we may be facing this day, help can be found by coming to Jesus and trusting in his grace. We don’t have to wait until we have it all together having a proper theology or perfect motive. Jesus accepts us and welcomes us to come just as we are.
The story of this desperate father brings to my mind the refrain of the old gospel song:
Where could I go – where could I go? – Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to help me in the end – Where could I go to the Lord?
Prayer: Welcoming Lord, I thank you for your willingness to care for me even when I do not fully appreciate who you are. As we together face the challenges of this day, help my understanding and love for you to grow. Amen.
