FOR THURSDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Luke 19:11-27
“[A nobleman] summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, ‘Do business with these until I come back.’” (Luke 19:13; New Revised Standard Version)
Even though the ten pounds (about $20) entrusted to each slave in this parable is worth about three months wages, it is small in comparison to another version of this story. In Matthew’s gospel, each slave is given a number of talents which were worth more than 15 years wages! So what do these small investments here represent?
Dr. Ralph Wilson suggests they represent the spiritual gifts, abilities and knowledge that Jesus has passed on to his disciples as well as to you and me. The real question is “what we will do with the portion [God] has entrusted to us.”
What you and I will do with what we’ve been entrusted is still an unfinished story. What will be in the next chapter of your life-story which will be written today?
Prayer: Father, thank you for trusting me with the gifts and abilities and opportunities that come my way. Help me to be a “good and faithful steward” throughout this day. Amen.
