FOR TUESDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: Micah 6:1-8
“He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8; New Revised Standard Version)
Don’t you hate instructions that are confusing and technical in their nature. I’m a simple guy who needs straightforward directions in plain words. This is probably the reason I’ve always had a fondness for this particular passage –especially the way Eugene Peterson paraphrases this verse:
“But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously — take God seriously” (The Message).
It’s true, life sometimes get’s complicated along the way. However, I find it helpful at the beginning of each day to remember these 3 basic rules: do whatever is fair and just, let my love for others be compassionate and loyal, and be serious about my commitment to God.
Prayer: Day by day, dear Lord, help me to be guided by the simple rules of living that your Word offers. Amen.
