FOR THURSDAY TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING: John 3:1-8
“What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.” (John 3:6; The New Revised Standard Version)
What does it mean to be “born of the Spirit”? Edward Markquart offers this answer: “To have the Spirit of Christ living inside of us. It means to have the love of Christ, the joy of Christ, the peace of Christ, the patience of Christ, kindness of Christ, the goodness of Christ, the faithfulness of Christ, the gentleness of Christ, the self control of Christ living inside of us. It is having the Spirit of Christ taking up residence in us and living within us.”
As we anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth, may we also seek the rebirth of the spirit of Christ in our hearts.
Prayer: O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray, cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. Amen.
